McElrea Racing
Meet the Team

McElrea Racing boasts an incredibly talented and experienced team of people who make us one of the most respected and well known racing service providers in Australia and New Zealand.

Tim McCumstie

Timmy has been around the track for almost 20 years, working with a number of high profile and championship winning V8 Supercar teams, but also grew up in the speedway pits of rural NSW.

He has been with MR since 2013 and has played an instrumental role in winning multiple championships with the team.

Timmy would like to be known as the practical joker in the team, bringing a few laughs to the team when the time is right. You might even catch him rocking out to a few 80s ballads - what can we say... every rose has it's thorn.

Stewart Notley-Smith

In search of sun and surf, Stewart moved from Melbourne back to the Gold Coast for the 2020 season and is the newest member of the AMRC (awesome MR crew).

'Disco Stew' started his motorsport career as a #3 V8 Supercar mechanic at DJR for the 2012 season, from there Stewart went on to Dunlop Super 2 series & Kumho series the following year. From 2014 to the present he has been involved with Porsche Carrera Cup & Cup Challenge working with some of Australia’s most competitive teams & Drivers.

He is looking forward to contributing to many wins with MR in the future.

Marty Horvath

Marty's passion for cars led to him becoming involved in motorsport while he was completing his apprenticeship in Brisbane.

Since then he has been involved in drag racing, circuit racing and speedway as both a competitor and a mechanic both in Australia and the UK where he worked for a well-known historic racing team.

After returning to Australia he established his own successful tuning business. Marty has been a regular race mechanic with McElrea Racing for more than 5 years.

Rob Clark

‘Clarkey’ first started working with MR back in 2009 with Nathan Caratti and Bob Thorn. He is #1 mechanic on Cooper Murrays car in the 2020 Carrera Cup championship.

Rob hails from Mildura and first got involved with racing with Neil Lowe & Ross Palmer in the late nineties. His racing resume includes multiple GT4 championship wins, multiple Asia-Pacific Rally championship wins. He is most proud of his resilience, will power and inability to learn from former mistakes!

He is a demon water-skier and is married to Anne with two kids, Niamh and Angus.

Hayden Morris

Hayden is the dedicated 'Data Engineer' for Anthony Gilbertson in the 2018 Porsche Carrera Cup championship.

He has an extensive racing background in Australia, New Zealand and throughout Asia and has been working closely with MR since it's inception in 2009.

Hayden started his career as a race mechanic and over a 10 year period worked is way up to V8 Supercar 'Team Manager' for Fabian Coulthard and John Bowe.

Along with his work at MR Hayden works in the marine and dent removal industries.

Jamie Ross

Jamie joined MR for the 2019 season and is "the tyre guy" at McElrea Racing, what he doesn’t know about tyres isn’t worth knowing!

In his early days he raced bikes, karts then speedway with success. In fact he won the NSW V8 Dirt Modified title in 2000, so who better to look after and manage our precious race tyres?

Jamie also runs a garage floor resurfacing business and whether it be bikes or cars, if it has wheels (and tyres) Jamie is into it.

Damien Van Twest

Damo drives for our transport provider DDS Transport Solutions and since 2018 has joined the team at tests and race weekends as a wheel & tyre manager.

Damo has been in the race car transport industry for 14 years moving a large array of cars from exotic road cars for Porsche and McLaren through to Supercars including cars for 888, DJR and Tekno.

Damo has a daughter and a son, loves his country music, playing old boys footy and can often be seen at church on a Sunday - when he’s not at a race track.

Jarom Broadhurst

Jarom is '#1 Mechanic' in the Porsche Carrera Cup and for various drivers in the 2018 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge.

He is the first apprentice employed by McElrea Racing and has now completed his time. During his training, he was recognised as the Gold Coast 'Apprentice of the Year' making us very proud!

Jarom is a self-motivated guy with a passion for motorsport and fitness and now that he spends so much time pumping iron, his fitness is admired and respected by his MR colleagues!

Heather Plews

With many years experience in busy and diverse businesses Heather (or 'Blondie' as she is affectionately known) is perfectly suited to her role at McElrea Racing.

She loves being organised and runs a tight ship keeping all the day-to-day operations in order.

Blondie enjoys sharing coffee and great food with friends and in her spare time she breeds a tropical fish.

Melanie McElrea

Melanie handles travel, accommodation, uniforms, sponsor ride days and all extra administration duties for McElrea Racing and No Second Chance.

A background working in Airlines both in 'Engineering' and 'Passenger Marketing' and being married to Andy for what seems like a very, very long time gives Mel the experience and patience required to tie-up all the loose ends that come her way!

Daniel Deighton

Dano is '#1 Mechanic' for Tony Walls in the Objective McLaren 650S in the Australian GT Championship and for various drivers in the 2017 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge.

He has worked as a race mechanic in NZ, Asia and Australia for over 15 years with notable success in Carrera Cup and V8 Supercars among numerous other racing achievements. He has racing in his blood with his dad Chris racing F1 powerboats back in the day.

He was the first full time race mechanic to join MR back in 2009. Since then has been the lead mechanic in MR's Mini Challenge, GT3 Cup Challenge, Carrera Cup and now McLaren AGT program. Dano is also in charge of Sub-Assembly at MR.

Wes McDougall

Wes is race engineer for various customers in the Australian GT championship. He uses the knowledge and experience gained from over 20 years in motorsport to head-up the MR Driver Development business, using modern technology and techniques to help school drivers of all talents behind the wheel of racecars.

Wes is an engineer with extensive experience in top flight motor racing both here in Australia and abroad. He has worked predominately in V8 Supercars since 2005 but also has experience with LMP cars, GT cars and single seaters.

In addition to his MRDD duties Wes engineers a Supercar for Todd Hazelwood in the championship series who, with Wes' guidance, won the 'Super 2' series in 2017.
